Crisis Intervention Unit
Responding to crises with safety, compassion, and skill.
The Roanoke Police Department’s Crisis Intervention Unit (CIU) is dedicated to helping individuals in crisis by using de-escalation, specialized training, and community partnerships to connect people with the right resources.
What We Do
Crisis Response
Our team responds to 911 calls involving individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance abuse issues, or emotional distress. We work to de-escalate situations safely and compassionately while ensuring immediate needs are met.
Case Management
Beyond the initial crisis, we provide follow-up visits and connect individuals with appropriate services and resources to support long-term stability.
Community Collaboration
We partner with community organizations, stakeholders, and advocates to strengthen crisis response systems and improve access to care.
About Us
The Crisis Intervention Unit is a co-response team made up of one police officer and one mental health professional. Together, we bring both public safety expertise and behavioral health knowledge to every call.
Our mission is to provide early intervention during crises, reduce the risk of harm, and minimize unnecessary arrests by diverting individuals to appropriate services.
Training
The CIU provides de-escalation and crisis intervention training to law enforcement officers and other agencies. This training equips first responders with the tools to safely and effectively manage situations involving individuals in crisis.
Research & Data
We gather and analyze data related to crisis response to identify emerging needs, trends, and issues in Roanoke. This research helps us improve our approach, advocate for resources, and strengthen community safety and well-being.
