Roanoke & the Railroad

We're celebrating Roanoke's unique history with train and railroad-themed fun all month.  See our on-loan display of photos and artifacts from the Roanoke Visitor Center & Museum at the library, check out a book about trains, or attend one of the special train-themed programs below.  ALL ABORAD for Learning Fun.

Early Learning 

(Ages 0-6) 

The library offers regular storytimes for our littlest learners, including:

Baby Rhyme Time - Tuesdays @10:30am

Board books, fingerplays & fun for ages 0-2 and their caregivers.

Namaste & Read - Thursdays @10:30am

Yoga, movement & stories for ages 2-6.  Bring your own towel or mat. 

Preschool Storytime - Fridays @10:30am

Stories, rhymes & songs for ages 2-6. Siblings welcome.

Family Storytime - 1st Wednesdays @ 6:30pm

Stories, rhymes, songs & a family activity for all families with young children. 

*Little Oak Street's Fall Play Scenes open beginning 10/16*

Kids Events

(Ages 5-10)

Fun &learning opportunities for school-aged children include:  

Bow Wow Readers - Wednesdays @4-5pm / Children's Area of Library

Read to a certified therapy dog in a low-stress, non-judgmental environment.  Sign up for a 15-minute slot, or check availability while you’re here!  Registration at https://bit.ly/RPLBowWow.  

Family Storytime: All Aboard for Reading Fun - Wed 10/4 @6:30pm / Meeting Room

A family that reads together grows together. Bring the whole family to this storytime all about trains.  We'll read, sing, rhyme, and work together to decorate a wooden train engine. 

WizArt - Fri 10/14 @5pm / Meeting Room

Student volunteers from Art Wheel Studio will lead kids in creating “crayon resist” leaf art.  All skills levels are welcome, and we provide supplies.

(Ages 11-17)

Fun &learning opportunities for tweens &teens include:  

*TLC will not meet this month, consider volunteering for Celebrate Roanoke on Saturday, 10/14 instead.*

Teen Benekit: Disability Visibility - pick up beginning 10/21 / take-home program

If you need volunteer hours for school or want to be more involved but can't commit to a strict schedule, take home a kit and volunteer on your own time.   

Roanoke Police & Dispatch Tour - Sat 10/21 @10am / Roanoke Police Department

Register for this tour of the Roanoke Police Department, Dispatch Center, and vehicle demonstration.  Especially for teens.  Must register at https://bit.ly/RPDtour23 before 10/13.  

Artificer's Club: Squeegee Painting - Sat 10/28 @2pm / Meeting Room

Join others who like to create at this month's Artificer's Club. We will squeeze paint onto our canvases, then use the squeegee to reveal our masterpieces!

We believe in life-long learning. Adult fun & learning opportunities include:

Citizenship Classes - Mon & Wed @ 5:00 - 7:30pm / Conference Room  

ESL Classes - Tue & Thu @ 12:00 -2:30 pm & 5:00 - 7:30pm / Conference Room  

North Texas Adult Education and Literacy (NTAEL) offers free classes for new citizens and learners of English.  To register or for more information, call 940-369-4047.  

Fiber Freind-zy - Thursdays @ 1:00 pm / Community Center 

Explore knitting, crochet, and other fiber arts at this weekly meeting where you can work on your own, seek advice from others, or learn something new. All skill levels are welcome.  

Voting 101 - Fri 10/6 @2pm / Meeting Room  

Learn all about the voting process-how and when to register, where to find information about candidates, and much more! This meeting takes place just in time to vote in the November elections, and we can help you register.  

Crafternoon: Tea Blending - Sat 7/21 @2pm / Meeting Room 

This month we will learn how to use herbs (grown right here at the library!) to create favorite familiar tea blends and custom blends inspired by literature.  We will taste our teas, too, alongside well-paired treats.

Follow the clues, search, and snap a photo.  Once you gather all 12, come by the Roanoke Visitors Center and Museum during operating hours, show us your selfies and claim your prize!
